Intermedia Duet for Human and Algorithmic Performer

A sheet of paper rests on a backlit table. Through a camera, its only window onto the world, an algorithmic performer reads the ink I draw and turns it into sound. It treats the score as a navigable landscape governed by three temporal topologies (spectral, Cartesian and residual), through which up to eight simultaneous voices find their own routes.

Its feature detection is deliberately tuned to misread, so that the points it navigates are as much its own invention as features of the drawing. Its decisions are projected in real time, so the audience can follow how the system interprets the score as the performance unfolds. The result is never quite the same twice.

Following Dick Higgins’s Fluxus concept of intermedia, the piece negotiates between sound and image rather than imposing the logic of one onto the other. It was accompanied by an artist’s book.
