Sound Loom
2024
Sound Loom is textile dialectics. It is non-narrative, multi-sensory juxtaposition. It is a tenth of global carbon emissions. It is the socks you wear and the curtain you draw to keep the glare of the sun off your screen. Sound Loom looms before you, an enveloping sound, light, sight, feel.
"Sound Loom" explores textiles as both a visual and sonic framework. The installation features perforated gauze-like fabric, creating layered, folding projection planes. Digitally deconstructed images of the weaving process and the animal and human labor involved dance across these planes when activated.
Hanging touch-sensitive threads trigger layers of video and sound. Six video channels and eight audio channels shift in and out of phase, generating new configurations with each interaction. To fully activate the piece, multiple participants must interact with the threads and physically connect, bridging the current and fostering a collective, immersive experience.
